Ms Naomi Maclean Bachelor of Commerce (major sequences in sport management and marketing) Graduated: Bachelor of Commerce (major sequences in sport management and marketing), Melbourne Campus at Burwood, 2008 Works: Marketing officer, Hockey Australia Naomi Maclean is a keen netballer who admits to never having wielded a hockey stick. ‘But I am learning the rules and about the sport,’ says the Deakin sport management graduate, who works as a marketing officer for Hockey Australia. Naomi scored several goals during her course. She received a Dean’s Merit Award for her excellent academic results and the 2008 Bowater Trust Medal for the student deemed the most outstanding ambassador for the University’s School of Management and Marketing. Deakin’s strong reputation in sport management had the University on Naomi’s radar from as early as Year 10. ‘I always wanted to work in sport, but in the administration side,’ she says. ‘I also enjoyed the marketing side and Deakin’s sport management course has always been renowned amongst all the universities. I always wanted to go to Deakin.’ During her course, Naomi completed two internships: at AFL SportsReady and Adidas. ‘They were really beneficial and I still utilise a lot of the contacts I made through them,’ she says. One of the aspects of her Deakin experience she still values most was the opportunity to create links within the industry during her course. ‘I loved the freedom Deakin gave me to go out and get work experience and to do the practicum fields,’ she says. ‘They really pushed you out into the industry.’ Naomi’s role with Hockey Australia provides her with plenty of variety. She puts together the marketing plans for all the tournaments, plus the junior development and coaching programs, as well as servicing all the sponsors and taking charge of supplying all team uniforms. The heavy focus on group work while she was studying helped her prepare for these roles. Find more information at http://www.deakin.edu.au/future-students/areas-of-study/teaching.php |
