Ms Rebecca Leech Bachelor of Arts (Honours), 2004 Bachelor of Arts (Professional Writing), 2002 Graduated: Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Melbourne Burwood Campus, 2004 Bachelor of Arts (Professional Writing), Melbourne Burwood Campus, 2002 Employed: Editor, Professional Educator For editor Rebecca Leech, winning professional awards is not the only highlight of her work with the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). ‘I am the editor of quarterly education magazine Professional Educator, which is produced for the Australian College of Educators by ACER in Melbourne. My role involves commissioning pieces of writing, appraising submitted editorial copy, and editing articles to suit the style of the magazine. I also have the opportunity to research and write articles myself.’ Since graduating in 2004, Rebecca has won three prestigious awards for her writing: the Australian College of Educators Victoria Media Award in 2009; Writer of the Year in 2007 at the Australian Business and Specialist Publishers’ Bell Awards; and Best Print-Media Feature in 2006 at the Australian Council of Deans of Education‘s Excellence in Education Journalism Awards. Rebecca explains that her success to date would not have been possible without her Deakin degree and the practical experience offered as part of the course. ‘I had a great time at Deakin. I forged strong friendships with fellow students, many of whom now work in writing and publishing, so this has become an important professional network. The course exposed me to a range of writing styles and allowed me to get a feel for different genres. I was able to learn from lecturers who were practicing writers and editors, highly-respected experts in their fields.’ Rebecca says there were also opportunities to get involved outside of the classroom. ‘The course at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood has its own literary journal called Verandah, which I helped to produce and I also edited the student newspaper, Crossfire, which was career-building practical experience,’ she says. Over the next few years, Rebecca plans to continue her career in journalism and study for her doctorate. Find more information at http://www.deakin.edu.au/future-students/areas-of-study/arts.php |
