Mr Redmond Hamlett
Bachelor of Arts (Architecture)* (Honours), 2005
Master of Architecture (by research), 2008

Employed: Graduate Architect, Ted Woollan Architects, Melbourne

After completing an undergraduate honours degree in Architecture at Deakin, Redmond Hamlett thought the University was the ‘obvious choice’ for a postgraduate research degree. Redmond’s research thesis explored the architecture of religious spaces and says it gave him the opportunity to focus on the notion of architecture being ‘used by the wider community’ rather than for private groups. He says that although tackling two theses during his studies was a ‘challenging task’, he found Deakin’s teaching staff very understanding and supportive.

He says both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Deakin have provided him with a varied career path and ‘invaluable exposure’ to a myriad of projects and professional situations. ‘Deakin instills a sense of communal-mindedness and self-empowerment within its students. Architecture at Deakin has a strong focus on professional practice and it’s a credit to have this kind of foresight and preparedness.’

Now a graduate architect with a Melbourne firm, he says he feels fortunate to have a position in the organisation that gives him overall responsibility for architectural projects. ‘This means being involved from the beginning to the end of a project, being the point of contact for the client and having a hand in all its stages … I think I’ve found a niche area that could keep me busy, and fulfilled, for quite some time,’ he says.

*Now Bachelor of Design (Architecture)
