Ms Ronamali Weerasuriya Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology) and Master of Health Promotion Graduated: Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology) (2006), Master of Health Promotion (2008) Career: Research Assistant, Parenting Research Centre, East Melbourne For Ronamali Weerasuriya, the skills she learnt while studying for a Master of Health Promotion at Deakin have helped her not only to work in a productive and caring manner in the field of community health, but also to gain a better understanding of the meaning of diversity. ‘(The) course content has taught me that it is the diversity of a community that makes it stronger, to respect this diversity and embrace it,’ she says. While she found preparing assignments and meeting deadlines challenging, Ronamali says the course taught her to ‘open my mind to new concepts and ways of learning and coping with the unknown’. Being an international student who was not only adjusting to living in a different country but to the idea of living without the direct support of her family, she says she particularly valued the supportive and approachable attitude of the teaching staff. Ronamali is currently employed as a research assistant, working on an early language and literacy development study at the not-for-profit research and development organisation, the Parenting Research Centre, in East Melbourne, but she hopes to one day return to Deakin as a member of its teaching staff. Having already worked on a research project with Associate Professor Mardie Townsend, looking at literature surrounding the mental health benefits gained from contact with nature, Ronamali also hopes to further contribute to the environmental health arena through research and community development or health promotion work. She says her postgraduate study at Deakin left her ‘ready to take on the real world’. ‘And the teaching staff and other students make your learning experience and journey one that you will always treasure.’ Find more information at http://www.deakin.edu.au/future-students/areas-of-study/psychology.php |
