Ms Samantha Richards
Bachelor of Engineering and Australian Olympic Athlete (Basketball)

At the 2012 London Olympic Games, Sam Richards took to the court as guard for the Australian Opals in her Olympic basketball debut. The Opals are recognised internationally as one of Australia’s best sporting teams and took home a bronze medal, winning against Russia 83-74 in an exciting match.

Sam has been playing basketball since the age of eight, when a friend asked her to join their team. Sam says if she wasn’t playing basketball she would be an engineer, and she is on her way to realising that dream as a student in Deakin University’s Bachelor of Engineering course which she began studying in 2011.

Representing Australia whilst studying to be an engineer is a wonderful achievement.

Depending on her area of specialisation and interests, when she finishes her engineering degree Sam could pursue a career in a variety of areas including manufacturing, electronics, telecommunications, power generation, construction, mining, resources, aeronautics, aerospace, water resource management and railroad and ship building.
