Mr Santosh Raj Pandey
Master of Water Resources Management

Graduated: Master of Water Resources Management
Currently: PhD (Engineering)

The mountainous terrain of landlocked Nepal is a stark contrast to the often-flat landscape of Australia that’s entirely surrounded by ocean. But Australia’s geography is a refreshing change for Santosh Pandey who has moved from his home in Nepal to study at Deakin’s Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds.

‘I am enjoying the beautiful beaches, unique landscapes, less population density and the vastness of the country,’ he says.

Santosh first came to Deakin in July 2008 to complete a Master of Water Resources Management degree under an ICE WaRM scholarship (International Centre of Excellence in Water Resource Management). Graduating last year, he has now commenced a PhD in Engineering.

Before moving to Australia, Santosh completed an undergraduate honours degree in environmental sciences and worked for five years on natural resources management projects across Nepal.

‘These projects related to sustainable environment management activities incorporating agro‑forestry, organic farming, catchment restoration and river training, vermin-composting, bio‑engineering at river eroded areas and road construction sides, plantation and vegetation for improving the quality of catchment and ultimately quality of fresh water,’ he says.

His PhD research builds and expands on his previous qualifications and experience.

‘It involves the evaluation of available pretreatments for minimising membrane fouling during water recovery and reuse,’ he explains.

Santosh says it was the opportunity to obtain ‘hands-on’ industry experience that attracted him to Deakin.

‘I’ve been able to get professional experience within the Australian water industry,’ he says. ‘During my masters degree I worked at the water reclamation branch of the regional water authority Barwon Water. My project was “Sustainable use of reclaimed water for irrigation purposes from inland water reclamation plants” and this has provided me with experience that is recognised internationally.’

Santosh is completing his PhD in Engineering under a scholarship from Deakin’s Institute for Technology Research and Innovation.
