Ms Tingting Song Master of Professional Accounting Master of Commerce (Commercial Law) Country of origin: China When Tingting Song first began her postgraduate studies at Deakin – and life in Australia – she admits to feeling ‘out of her comfort zone’. ‘I was a little bit stressed at the beginning, however, through Deakin Business School Society and Postgraduate Mentor Program, I was supported by many of the senior students who were very friendly and willing to share their experience and knowledge so that I could adapt to this new environment quickly,’ she says. Joining Deakin Toastmaster's club also provided Tingting with the opportunity to expand her language and public speaking skills. ‘Deakin Business School Society and Deakin Toastmaster’s Club has been a very good experience and helped me develop public speaking skills, which is an absolute prerequisite for a business school student,’ she says. Tingting is impressed with Deakin’s resources and the learning spaces provided for students. She says these contribute to a balanced and well-rounded learning environment. ‘I am also developing my team-building, communication and organisation skills. Deakin has helped me push the boundaries and challenges me to achieve more,’ she says. Tingting has also been greatly encouraged by the student support provided by Deakin’s staff. ‘The support and mentorship I have received from my teachers has not only made me more confident, but also made studying very enjoyable,’ she says. Through extracurricular activities and group-study assignments Tingting has made a wide group of friends and is enjoying getting to know others from a diversity of cultures. ‘It has made my study experience really enriching … and besides that, my communication skills and leadership skills has been enhanced greatly through the voluntary working opportunity provided by the university.’ Tingting’s combined course will give her a dual masters degrees and she says the flexibility of learning at Deakin is outstanding. ‘I’m able to keep up with my coursework and assignments through recorded lectures, podcasts and downloadable mp3s.’ She says that the University is preparing her for the real world of business. ‘Deakin is preparing me to be an independent, mature-minded professional with real-world practical knowledge — fully-prepared for the changing business world,’ she says. |
