Biography

Jane joined the School of Psychology leadership team in 2012 and has held the position of Head of the School of Psychology since 2017.  She is very proud of the School’s many achievements and the excellence consistently demonstrated across teaching and research domains.

The School is an ERA 5 (well above world standard) rated psychology department which is home to over 130 research/academic staff and 170 PhD students. Our flagship research centre is the Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development (SEED), which brings together lifecourse, clinical and public health research and practice to describe the major milestones in emotional life, advise on the most effective approaches to intervening at the earliest opportunities in troubled pathways, and engage systems for translating this knowledge broadly. SEED is growing to fulfill a broader vision of establishing a Centre for Lifespan Research (SEED-Lifespan), that builds on the foundations we have established in early development, to includes research programs across the lifespan, including middle (25-65 years) and later adult life (65+ years).  We also have significant profiles in substance misuse and addiction, violence prevention, neurodevelopmental disorders, body image and eating disorders, well-being, disability, mental health, and cognitive neuroscience, among others. Much of this work is carried out through one of our research hubs, and each feed into SEED’s broader focus on development across the lifespan. The School has significant clinical and research partnerships with industry bodies and these are central to our mission to answer questions that make a difference to the communities we inhabit and serve.

The School is also highly recognised for excellence in learning and teaching.  Staff are dedicated to enhancing the student experience and their work has been  widely acknowledged through consistently high student evaluations as well as teaching fellowships, awards and prizes, including national awards.

Research interests

My research interests are broad, with a particular focus on the mental health and the social and emotional wellbeing of young people with developmental disorders, and including the development and evaluation of assessment protocols and intervention programs tailored to meet their needs. I collaborate with research teams in the School, Faculty and across the university, as well as other universities. My research has been supported by Category 1 funding, and a range of Government and philanthropic funding. My HDR students have undertaken research in clinical, forensic, and health psychology addressing a variety of issues across the lifespan. Projects have included building resilience in children in out-of-home care, identifying people with autism in the criminal justice system, enhancing mental health and wellbeing of people with intellectual disability and with autism, the development of novel programs to treat depression, drug and alcohol use in people with intellectual disability, adjustment and wellbeing in aged care, and addressing sleep problems in children with autism and ADHD.

Teaching interests

During my 30+ years in the tertiary sector, l have maintained currency of practice as a Clinical Psychologist and an endorsed clinical supervisor. This has enabled me to enhance and contextualise the connection between theory and practice in teaching and clinical supervision. l have served as the Director of the Professional Programs in the School of Psychology, with oversight of the programs for training of psychologists as competent and ethical professionals. I have been active in the implementation and evaluation of innovative teaching practices to enhance and to assess clinical competencies and  have achieved national recognition for excellence in university teaching. l lead the Deakin competency-based supervisor training program, which is endorsed by the Psychology Board to provide mandated training for psychologists wanting to become a Board-approved supervisor.
