Biography

Renee Fiolet is a lecturer within the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Deakin University and is also a PhD candidate. Her research topic is “Intimate Partner Violence: What women want from the delivery of nursing and midwifery care”. As a nurse, she has worked in women’s health, paediatrics, community health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health for the last eleven years. Renee is treasurer on the Board for Zena Women’s Services, a comprehensive facility which offers care for women who are exposed to domestic violence in Geelong and the surrounding areas.  She is also the Chairperson for the UN Women Australia Geelong Chapter and has organised many events in the Geelong region to bring women together to raise community awareness about women’s issues.  Renee is the Victorian representative for the National Rural Women’s Network which currently overseas the work done by the National Rural Women’s Coalition, which is a collaborative voice for women living in rural, regional and remote areas of Australia. Renee was also a representative for the Equality Rights Alliance at the 2013 National  Rural Women’s Summit in Canberra which resulted in a report produced for government, policy makers and community members about the current “state of play” for Australia’s rural, regional and remote women. Renee is on the G21 Month of Action Committee, which is dedicated to raising awareness about violence against women within the Geelong and surrounding regions through a month of planned activities.  Promoting equity in health, particularly for rural populations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and for women, is a passion of Renee’s, who attempts to send this message through the teaching she provides as well as  any engagement she has with local media and community organisations. For a hobby, Renee is the Social Inclusion Officer for a Geelong cricket club and has served on their committee for more than 15 years.
