Richard is the founding Director of the Centre for Rural Regional Law and Justice, based at Deakin University, Geelong Campus. The Aim of the Centre is to enhance access to improved justice systems and services for rural and regional Victorians through research, education, engagement and advocacy.
Richard has had extensive experience working in community based services and in delivering legal services to rural and regional Victoria. He was involved in establishing both the Barwon and Villamanta Community Legal Services in regional Victoria and as Director of Publishing with the Victoria Law Foundation, published the Rural Law Handbook and established the Foundation’s Rural Law Online website.
With the support of the Faculty of Business and Law, Richard initiated the 1st National Rural Law and Justice Conference opened by the Chief Justice of Australia, Chief Justice Robert French and has played a major role in the establishment of the National Rural Law and Justice Alliance – he is currently a member of the Alliance Council.
He has an active research profile, currently leading research projects with a focus on legal ethics, e-learning, disability access, and access to justice for rural and regional communities. He has authored a number of publications and contributed to numerous state and federal inquiries and law reform activities.
