A Course Materials Quality Framework

The genesis of the Course Materials quality Framework began with Deakin University's 2006 Operational Plan which required that the following be achieved:

'Develop and implement quality assurance processes and standards for course materials and ensure that by the end of 2006 that at least 70% of all course materials produced in Faculties and the Knowledge Media Division are reviewed under these processes before delivery.'

In response to this target, Knowledge Media Division (KMD) led the way in developing a course materials quality assurance framework to guide staff (both within the faculties and within KMD) in the creation of quality course materials. Subsequent Operational Plans have included similar targets, intending the framework to be integrated within the Deakin Teaching and Learning Quality Framework and broadened in scope to apply across all types of course materials produced by Deakin. The inaugural iteration of the framework was endorsed by Academic Board in July 2006 and each subsequent development of the framework is similarly ratified.

The Course Materials Quality Framework consists of:

  • 10 core quality principles: a list of 10 agreed core quality principles for course materials, addressing content, structure, presentation and pedagogy
  • Course Materials Best Practice Guidelines (.PDF file - 125K - authentication required): a detailed collection of best practices relating to the core quality principles for course materials
  • Course Materials Standards that encompass the 10 core quality principles (as detailed in the Best Practice Guidelines), but focus exclusively on those features and quality indicators relevant to a specific material type
  • Quality assurance processes, and programs
