There are a variety of definitions of research. The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research defines it as ‘An original investigation undertaken to gain knowledge, understanding and insight. It is a broad concept and there is no simple, single way to define research for all disciplines.’ (Code, p. 1) Research usually excludes materials developed for teaching or quality assurance activities.
