Quality of life for people with disabilities and an increasingly aging population has been a major focus of research in recent years. It is not only important for those living extensive periods of time in institutions, but also for others who seek to gain greater access to life in their local communities. The Institute of Disability Studies has a body of staff and student researchers focusing on such aspects as access to employment, telecommunications, assistive technology, community living, fairness in the legal system, collaborative services, informed decision making and assessment. Social models of disability highlight the oppressed and stigmatised lives of people with disabilities reinforced by negative stereotypes and discourses that focus on deficits rather than abilities and potential. The Institute research efforts focus on enhancing our understanding of strategies to improve participation in wide areas of community living for people with varying disabilities and their families.
