ECR supervision fast track program

Successful completion of the ECR Supervision Fast Track Program requires you to have self-documented contact with HDR candidates at 3 stages of their candidature:

  1. commencement
  2. in the middle
  3. completion

This contact can occur by:

  1. existing associate supervision; or
  2. facilitation through various methods as set out below (key dates highlighted in bold).

Registration process for program

To register for this program please head to the Event Registration System and register. By registering we will be able to communicate to you information about workshops, conferences and other events relating to this program as they become available.

1. Commencement

The commencement of candidature involves procedural and substantive requirements. The primary procedural requirement is the creation of a proper candidature agreement. The primary substantive requirement is the formulation of a research question which is capable of leading to a successful thesis.

Between 28 to 30 March 2008 there was an induction conference for all new HDR candidates. Many thanks to the 20 of you who supported that venture. Your input was invaluable and received a very positive response from the candidates.

At this conference there was discussion of a 3 month milestone, being a 5 minute presentation: “My research question is …”. These presentations will be given between 24 and 27 June 2008.

There are workshops to assist in the preparation of this presentation which will be conducted between 24 and 29 April 2008 on Burwood and Waurn Ponds campuses. You should attend one of these workshops if at all possible:

2. In the middle

There are many different ways in which you might demonstrate contact with candidates in the middle of their candidature. Examples which spring to mind in a list which is not intended to be exhaustive are:

  1. co-ordination of presentations for a Faculty colloquium;
  2. organising a support group for candidates (and I would encourage those who want to explore the idea of e-groups for part-time and off campus candidates;
  3. assisting with the formal monitoring of progress by participation in supervisory panels or other forms of review, including the Annual Review.

Further opportunities are presented by the HDR Chapter week and HDR Science and Technology Writing Workshops events.

3. Completion

The HDR Completion retreat this year will be conducted on at the Warrnambool campus for five days.

I welcome your attendance at this retreat. The retreat will give you the opportunity for:
