A. Details can be found in the Scholarships web page.

Q2. When are the Deakin Scholarships offered?

The University considers scholarship applications primarily in two main rounds:

•Round 1: for international applicants closes on 30 September each year.

•Round 2: for Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens closes on 31 October each year.

In some years, a mid-year round is held for Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens. The closing date for this is announced nearer the time.

Q3. How does the University's scholarship ranking process work?

A. Once the closing date for a scholarship round has passed, applications are sent to the appropriate School for advice and an initial ranking. The final order of merit is determined by the Scholarships Subcommittee of the University's Joint Committee on Research. This subcommittee ranks applications across the whole University.

The scholarships are for students proceeding to a higher degree by research, who have either

•Qualified for a bachelors degree with first class honours; or

•Qualifications that are demonstrably equivalent to a bachelors degree with first class honours (further information is provided in the section What is honours equivalence?).

The primary merit criterion is the honours standard achieved. Alignment with the University's strategic research priorities, overall academic performance and achievements indicating research potential (e.g. publications) will also be used.

In the case of first class honours or equivalent qualifications, Schools are required to categorise the applicant's performance relative to all other first class honours graduates in the last five years, as follows:

A - in the top third of all first class honours graduates

B - in the middle third of all first class honours graduates

C - in the lower third of all first class honours graduates.

The scholarship rounds at Deakin are extremely competitive. The University receives a large number of very strong applications. In recent years, it has not been possible to offer scholarships to all of the applicants ranked first class honours or equivalent.

Q4. Can I apply for a Deakin scholarship if I have already commenced my degree?

A. Yes, but it will be necessary to either have first class honours, or to demonstrate verifiable evidence of equivalence to first class honours based on independent assessment. Simply having been enrolled in the degree and made progress towards completion does not constitute such evidence. Your School will need to present a case in writing to support the claim for equivalence. For further information, please see the section What is honours equivalence?

The application form is available from out Higher Degrees by Research Forms and Guidelines web page.

Q5. Can I transfer my scholarship when I transfer my studies from other university to Deakin?

A. This will depend on the type of scholarship. If you are receiving an Australian Postgraduate Award (Commonwealth scholarship), you may be able to transfer it if Deakin has sufficient funds to support the stipend. EIPRS and NHMRC needs to be approved by both universities. Please contact the Scholarships Officer for further information.

Q6. Can I apply for a scholarship extension, and how do I do so?

AThe following general conditions apply to:

Scholarship extensions are not available to Masters candidates. Doctoral candidates may apply for an extension of up to six months. The terms and conditions for some other scholarships (i.e. other than APA, DUPRS, EIPRS and DUIRS) may differ. In cases of Faculty-, School- or industry-funded scholarships, the possibility of an extension should be set out in the terms and conditions. If not, the School or Faculty will need to indicate whether they or the industry partner, if applicable, will fund the extra period.

Applications for extension may be made only where the research has been delayed due to circumstances beyond the awardee's control and this must be related to the conduct of the research. Applications will not be approved where the research has been delayed due to problems of a personal nature.

Applicants for an extension of scholarship are asked to provide:

Applications for extension must reach the Scholarships Officer before the initial period of the scholarship expires. This will require the scholarship holder to commence the application process (in conjunction with their supervisor) at least a month before the scholarship expires. There are two reasons why it is important to apply for an extension before the scholarship expires:

The form to be used is the Extension of Scholarship Application form.

Q8. Can I take paid leave during my scholarship?

A. You will need to check the terms and conditions of your particular scholarship but, generally, the answer is yes: one month per year which must be taken within the tenure of the scholarship.

Q9. Can I undertake paid employment while on a scholarship?

A. You will need to check the terms and conditions of your particular scholarship but, generally, you are permitted to undertake a limited amount of part-time employment (i.e. up to six hours per week), provided the work does not interfere with the progress of your research program. In awarding you a scholarship to undertake a higher degree by research, the University's expectation is that you work full-time on your research project and that you have as few other demands on your time as possible.

Approval must be sought for periods of part-time work amounting to more than six hours per week. The Head of School must certify that the work does not interfere with the progress of the research and the statement must be lodged with the Research Services Division.
