Information for Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents

Scholarship applicants should hold a first class Honours degree or equivalent. Progress during candidature does not constitute equivalence to first class Honours, however output such as refereed publications could form the basis of a case for equivalence.

The information below applies to Australian citizens and permanent residents and New Zealand citizens only.

Information for international students can be found on our International students web page as well as the Deakin International website.

Applying for scholarships and candidature

Applications for the 2009 mid-year round have now closed.

Applications for the 2010 scholarship round close on 31st October 2009.

You can apply for candidature at any time of the year.
Applications for APA and DUPR scholarships close on 31 October each year. You can download the application form, referee report and terms and conditions of APA and DUPR from the HDR Forms and Guidelines page.

Scholarships

The University offers a range of scholarships for higher degrees by research.

Selection for scholarships is based on academic merit, and the primary criterion is the standard of Honours or its equivalent qualification achieved (a high first class Honours degree or equivalent is required to be competitive for APA and DUPR scholarships). Other factors that will be considered include performance in the final year of undergraduate study, and evidence of research potential (e.g. authorship of papers in a refereed journal).

Australian Postgraduate Awards (APAs)

The University receives around 20 new APAs each year which are awarded to first class Honours graduates or those with equivalent qualifications.

Deakin University Postgraduate Research Scholarships (DUPRS)

Deakin University offers around 40 new scholarships each year under similar conditions to APA scholarships.

Australian Postgraduate Awards (Industry)

These scholarships are for specific research projects in collaboration with industry, government, business or other collaborators. These are generally advertised in May and November each year.

Industry and other scholarships

There are a variety of scholarships funded by industry or from other sources available during the year. Contact the Faculty Offices for further details. Information about other scholarship opportunities is available from

Higher degrees by research at Deakin University

Deakin University offers three main types of research degrees: research Masters, PhD and professional doctorates.

A masters degree is awarded for an original contribution to knowledge achieved in one to two years of full-time candidature or the equivalent in part-time candidature. The focus of the degree is on research, but a limited amount of coursework may be included in the program. The masters degree provides an advanced qualification for many careers, such as education, nursing, law and engineering.

Doctoral degrees are awarded for a substantial original contribution to knowledge achieved in two to four years of full-time candidature or the equivalent in part-time candidature.
The PhD is the basic qualification for an academic or research career; however it forms an ideal basis for many other careers, and PhD graduates are in demand for a range of positions in business and industry.

Deakin University offers the following higher degrees by research:

Masters degrees
Master of Applied Science
Master of Architecture
Master of Arts
Master of Construction Management
Master of Commerce
Master of Economics
Master of Engineering
Master of Laws
Master of Nursing
Master of Science
Master of Social Work

Doctoral degrees
Doctor of Philosophy
Doctor of Psychology

You should discuss the various options with the relevant School or Faculty to ensure that you enrol in the program which meets your needs and expectations.

Eligibility for admission to candidature

Admission to candidature is normally granted on the basis of a Bachelors degree with Honours or a Masters degree with a substantial research component.

It is expected that a candidate for a doctoral program will have achieved the standard of at least second class Honours (upper division); and that a candidate for a Masters degree will have achieved the standard of second class Honours.

Other qualifications may be accepted if the Higher Degrees by Research Committee considers them as equivalent and there is demonstrated evidence of research ability.

Applicants who do not meet the formal entry requirements may be admitted to provisional candidature. In such cases the Committee will prescribe a course of advanced study followed by formal assessment.

Fees

The fee structure for students is as follows:

Tuition fees will not be charged for the normal duration of higher degree by research candidature, i.e. up to the maximum completion date. For commencing candidates this is as follows:

Candidates transferring higher degree by research candidature from another institution will be entitled to the above allowance less the period of study at the previous institution (i.e. up to the maximum completion date indicated at the time of offer).

Any extension of candidature beyond the advised maximum completion date may incur tuition fees.
