PhD Scholarship – Advanced Tool Wear Analysis

Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation
Faculty of Science and Technology
Annual stipend $26,140 (tax exempt) for three years

The Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation (CMFI) at Deakin University is a multidisciplinary research group addressing the needs of the materials manufacturing industries. The research project is part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project, investigating wear on sheet metal forming tools. The project involves industry partners from within the automotive and tooling industries. The appointee will investigate the localised loading conditions and wear response at the surface of typical sheet metal forming dies. State-of-the-art Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques and experimental methods will be used to develop a clearer understanding of the wear behaviour; with much focus on the micro-scale mechanisms that occur. The outcomes of the project will have particular relevance to the product development and stamping engineering processes used in the automotive industry.

The candidate will work in the Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation at Deakin University Waurn Ponds campus in Geelong. This opportunity provides an excellent mix of academic and professional development. The successful applicant will be well placed to complete a PhD in three years and embark on a career path in the academic or professional arena.

The candidate must have at least an upper second class Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant field of materials engineering, metallurgy, engineering or science. The position will demand excellent written and oral presentation skills and the ability to work within a team. The candidate must also be organised and highly motivated. A background in FEA and/or automotive materials is desirable. Candidates must be willing to study full time on-campus in Geelong and to commence by the end of July 2008.

Applications close 6 June 2008.
