The University offers a range of scholarships for higher degrees by research.
Selection for scholarships is based on outstanding academic merit, and the primary criterion to be competitive is a Bachelors degree with first class honours or a Research Masters degree with exceptional results. The other factor that will be considered is evidence of research potential (e.g. authorship of papers in refereed journals).
Deakin University offers scholarships to international students of outstanding academic merit who wish to undertake research Masters and Doctoral programs. The scholarships provide financial support for three years for a Doctoral program and two years for a Masters program. Applicants must:
Successful applicants will receive tuition fees (up to A$18,000) plus a stipend of A$18,000 per annum. Additional benefits such as paid Overseas Health cover during the tenure of the award and thesis production reimbursement may be available to outstanding applicants.
The EIPRS scheme is funded by the Commonwealth Government and provides tuition fees and overseas health insurance benefits for international candidates to undertake higher degree by research programs in areas which will support Australian research strengths.
Successful applicants receive an EIPRS scholarship plus a living allowance from Deakin University at the standard Australian Postgraduate Award rate (A$20,007 per annum for single person, and for students with dependants A$22,554). A relocation and travel allowance within Australia is also provided as well as an allowance for production of the thesis.
In addition to the criteria given above, applicants for EIPRS Scholarships must not have commenced the Doctoral or Masters program for which they are seeking the scholarship.
Deakin University offers three main types of research degrees: research masters, PhD and professional doctorates.
A masters degree is awarded for an original contribution to knowledge achieved in one to two years of full-time candidature. The masters degree provides an advanced qualification for many careers, such as education, nursing, law and engineering.
Doctoral degrees are awarded for a substantial original contribution to knowledge achieved in two to four years of full-time candidature. The PhD is the basic qualification for an academic or research career; however it forms an ideal basis for many other careers, and PhD graduates are in demand for a range of positions in business and industry.
The professional doctorates combine coursework and structured research tasks which are specifically related to professional practice, and are often carried out in the workplace. The standard is equivalent to the PhD but the orientation is towards the development of professional practice rather than primarily as a contribution to academic knowledge.
