Professor Neil Archbold BA MSc PhD Melb, was an eminent scholar who was actively involved in all facets of research and research training at Deakin University.

Professor Archbold was Professor and Personal Chair in Palaeontology at the School of Ecology and Environment and the coordinator of Earth Sciences at Deakin University. He was the author of 160 scholarly publications, was awarded Australian Research Council grants of over $1m and was a long-standing member of the Royal Society of Victoria and that body’s president from 2001 to 2004. Professor Archbold was the Chair of the Academic Board’s Higher Degrees by Research Subcommittee from 2003 to his death in November 2005.

The Award and Medal

Neil Archbold Memorial Travel Awards are to be awarded each year to the two Deakin University higher degree by research candidates who produce the best peer-reviewed journal articles:

The travel awards, of $2500 each, are to be used during candidature for research-related travel.

The winners will also be presented with a medal at graduation or some other appropriate event.

Eligibility

  1. Eligible applicants must have completed at least 12 months (full-time equivalent) higher degree by research candidature at Deakin University by the closing date for applications.
  2. Only peer-reviewed journal articles which have been published or received final approval for publication will be considered. (Peer-reviewed conference papers will not be considered.)
  3. The journal article must have been completed since candidature commenced.
  4. The journal article as well as evidence that the journal article has been published or received final approval for publication must be provided by the application closing date. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide this evidence.
  5. All supporting statements and endorsements must be obtained by the applicant prior to lodging the application.

The closing date for applications has now been extended until 25 July 2008.

Selection of Winners

The winners will be selected by the Scholarships Subcommittee at its mid-year meeting in August each year. Applicants will be notified of the outcome in August.

Terms and Conditions of the Award

  1. Research-related travel needs to be directly related to the applicant's project and should enhance the final research outcome (i.e. the thesis, or assist in the dissemination of the findings) Examples include: fieldwork/data collection, conference presentations, archival work. (Note: Conference attendance alone would not usually be sufficient)
  2. The applicant is required to have fulfilled all requirements of candidature up to the time of application and be making satisfactory progress in order to be eligible for the award.
  3. Candidates may apply more than once during candidature but will not receive the award more than once.
  4. Applicants must be within the normal candidature limits (i.e., two years full-time equivalent for Masters candidates and four years full-time equivalent for PhD candidates) at the time the award is to be taken.
  5. The award cannot be transferred to another institution; candidates must continue to be enrolled at Deakin. In the event that a candidate transfers after the award has been announced, the medal and award will be forfeited.
  6. Should a candidate transfer after the award has been expended but before the successful completion of their degree, the medal will be forfeited.
  7. Travel must be undertaken and the funds fully expended within the same financial year (i.e., the award is made in August of each year and funds must be expended by 30th June the following year.
  8. Recipients of the award are encouraged to present a seminar in their Faculty or School on the work they have undertaken.
  9. The decision of the Scholarships Subcommittee is final and applications for review will not be considered.
  10. Approval to vary the research-related travel stated in an application needs to be obtained from the Chair, Research and Research Training Committee.
  11. Awardees shall diligently, and to the best of their ability, apply themselves to the successful completion of the degree, and must provide all reports required by the University.
  12. An Awardee is required to conform to the regulations and statutes (including disciplinary provisions) of the University.
