PhD Scholarship - LOOK (Lifestyle of our Kids)

Annual stipend $23,294 (tax exempt) for three years

The Musculoskeletal Research Unit at Deakin University is part of a large research consortium investigating the affects of childhood physical activity on long term health benefits. This is a Canberra based four year exercise intervention in 800 school children with follow up over twenty years. The appointee will investigate the effect of exercise after two years of intervention. In particular to investigate the effect of exercise and growth on the musculoskeletal system and how these adaptational processes are influenced by age, pubertal stages, and muscle forces. Using state-of the-art technology (peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography - pQCT), muscle and bone density and morphological parameters as well as dynamic muscle function will be analysed.

The candidate will work in the Musculoskeletal Research Unit at Deakin University Burwood campus and will participate in data collection in Canberra for four months (August to November 2007). Travel and accommodation costs are covered by the study. This opportunity provides an excellent mix of academic and professional development. The successful applicant will be well placed to complete a PhD in three years and embark on a career path in the academic or professional arena.

The candidate must have a first class Honours degree or equivalent in exercise physiology or other relevant science or engineering discipline. The position will demand excellent organisational skills and the ability to work with a team. The candidate will be responsible for day to day management of the project. Candidates must be willing to study full time on-campus in Melbourne and to commence by the end of July 2007.
