2008 Deakin University Research Conference

A New Vision for Research at Deakin University

When: Tuesday 30th September, 2008 - 10:00am to 4:00pm

Where: Melbourne Campus at Burwood, Rusden Lecture Theatre LT13

Conference aims to:

Keynote speaker: Professor Richard Snook, School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science, University of Manchester, UK. Professor Snook obtained his MSc, PhD and DSc from Imperial College, University of London. He is Professor of Analytical Science at the University of Manchester, and former Pro Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UMIST. As a founding member and a principal investigator at the Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (MIB) he is currently working at the interface of the physical and life sciences. Current research is concerned with spectroscopic and optical measurements for studying the properties of prostate cancer cell lines. With colleagues in the MIB and the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research he has developed photo-acoustic spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and Raman tweezer methods for discrimination between prostate cancer cell lines, with the aim of providing improved methods of diagnosis of aggressive forms of the disease.

Building on his extensive experience in atomic spectroscopy Professor Snook and his research group are also applying laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry to archaeometric studies of ancient bones and neolithic pottery. In environmental research a kinetic method for toxicity testing in water has been developed using bioluminescence photobacteria as indicator species. The success in all of these areas of research depends heavily on the involvement and dedication of a team of scientists each bringing their own disciplinary skills and commitment to interdisciplinary research, which is a particular interest of Professor Snook.
