Deakin University has a long and well-established tradition of research and education in the field of disability. So too, it has a strong commitment to building a university community characterised by the highest principles and standards of equity and diversity.
At Deakin University, consistent with the World Health Organisations perspective, we recognise that disability is not just a quality or attribute inherent in an individual person that requires treatment or cure, though impairments to body structures and functions often benefit from specific interventions and the availability of innovative technology.
We recognise that disability arises as a consequence of the complex interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors, including physical, economic and attitudinal barriers to participation at home, in education, at work or in the community more generally.
We seek to support people with disability, their families, and the professionals who work with them, together with policy makers and service providers, by engaging with people and their communities, and harnessing multi-disciplinary expertise to answer questions and provide innovative evidence-based solutions to issues affecting people with disability and their communities.
