Characterization Lab

Characterization lab instrument

This lab is equipped with various instruments to determine element, mechanical and crystalline composition of materials

Equipment list:

  • Leco Glow Discharge Atomic Emission Spectrometer

The LECO GDS850A allows for the quantitative depth profiling of the carburized surfaces by determining the chemical composition of the sample layer-by-layer. Since the GDS850A uniformly sputters the sample surface in a non-preferential manner, accurate sampling is attained at known depths.

  • An Ultra micro indentation system (Nano hardness)

The CSIRO - Ultra Micro Indentation System (informally a Nano Hardness Tester) has been used at Deakin to determine super elasticity, pile up effect and grid pattern strain analyses in mostly metallics. We often use the Nano Hardness in conjunction with the attached Atomic Force Microscope to examine indents for changes in profile, hardness or phase.
