Scattering techniques are very powerful methods, particularly in the studies of soft matter. They provide a statistical perspective on structure over a wide range of length-scales not easily accessible by real space imaging methods. A workshop at Deakin University on 25-26 March 2014 will provide a platform for post-graduate and more experienced senior researchers to enhance their theoretical knowledge and help in designing and analysing measurements at advanced facilities such as the Australian Synchrotron and neutron beam instruments at ANSTO’s Opal Research reactor. The workshop will focus on three techniques:
The primary focus of the workshop will be on the fundamental principles in the utilisation of reciprocal space measurements to obtain real space structural information. Presentations on a number of case studies will be included. Professor Lingxue Kong from the Institute for Frontier Materials said the workshop would be invaluable to researchers working in a range of areas such as polymer and materials science, biophysics, nanotechnology and colloidal science.
The workshop will include tutorials from experienced practitioners:
Professor Gary Bryant (Centre for Molecular & Nanoscale Physics, RMIT University), light scattering and photon correlation spectroscopy.
Dr Chris Garvey (Bragg Institute, Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation), small angle scattering.
Dr Stephen Holt (Bragg Institute, Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation), reflectometry.
A number of talks on practical examples of studies and student projects involving scattering techniques will also be delivered

Dr Bronwyn Laycock (Queensland University) – Elucidating the structure of polyhydroxylkanoate biopolymer blends.
Dr Ludovic Dumee (Deakin University) - SAXS characterization of nano-porous materials: designing pore size and shape.
Dr Hsin-Hui Shen (Monash University) - Annexin V-Functionalized Cubosomes: simulated cell membranes interaction using QCM-D and neutron reflectometry
