Rubber Recycling

Over one billion end-of-life (EOL) tyres worldwide, including more than 20 million in Australia, require disposal each year. Deakin University's Polymers Group is helping to provide a solution for tyre rubber recycling, enabling the reclaimed rubber to be utilized in industry and at the same time reducing the EOL tyres negative impact on the environment. Since 2009 we have collaborated with our industry partner VR TEK Global Pty Ltd in this regard, establishing and optimizing a pilot scale operation at Deakin's Geelong campus for tyre recycling based on the company's patented technologies, including ozone based reclaiming and activation of rubber as well as extrusion based rubber devulcanization. Based on this pilot scale recycling operation, VR TEK Global is preparing to set up commercial facilities in Australia and overseas to produce high quality, high value rubber powders.
