Research interests:
Dr Lamb's research is focussed on utilizing physics to make better materials and solve industrial problems. In more than thirty years of research he has worked on elementary particle physics, engineering noise control, robotic sheep shearing, textile yarn engineering and the prediction of spinning performance, plasma physics and now functional nanomaterials. He has been project leader and inventor or co-inventor of a number of significant textile and fibre related developments such as Siroclear, Solospun and Sirolan Yarnspec. Siroclear was the first detector of coloured contaminants in yarn, of which more than 200,000 units have been sold globally resulting in $4M in royalties. Sirolan Yarnspec, the first software and knowledge package for the prediction of yarn properties and spinning performance, has been used to benchmark and improve performance in wool spinning mills around the world. It has also quantified the relative importance of different fibre properties and changed the premiums and discounts for some properties, which has impacted right back to sheep breeding. He has also been actively involved in Tournament of Minds for more than twenty years and in the effective use of lateral thinking, creative problem-solving and teamwork.
Current projects:
Dr Lamb primarily has a mentoring and support role in functional nanomaterials, plasma projects and textile engineering.
