Research interests:

Dr Pereira's current research is primarily focussed on the field of sheet metal stamping, with particular relevance to the automotive manufacturing industry. He has conducted studies in relation to springback and formability, but has mainly focussed on research relevant to wear of stamping dies (including aspects of tribology, contact, and deformation behaviour). Dr Pereira's research and expertise is multi-disciplinary, with a strong focus on both novel experimental methods and advanced numerical modelling techniques. This combined approach has resulted in significant contributions to our understanding of the contact, deformation, wear and thermal conditions at the die radius when stamping modern high strength steels.

Dr Pereira has designed and developed new experimental tests and analysis methods to examine wear over the die radius under controlled laboratory conditions, using IFM's Erichsen Sheet Formability Tester. Additionally, he was involved in the the design, development, installation and commissioning of IFM's novel semi-industrial sheet metal stamping wear test facility. These two novel sheet metal stamping wear test systems, and associated analysis techniques, have led to high quality industrial and academic output and the development and attraction of continuing and new research collaborations.
