Australia’s Deakin University is entering an exciting phase in the growth of its research profile.
Deakin's Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds in Victoria is at the heart of this growth. A key element in this strategy is the proposed establishment of the Institute for Technology Research and Innovation.
The proposed Institute will bring together three of Deakin’s leading research groups:
While BioDeakin, CMFI and ISRG are all successful entities in their own right, the establishment of a new overarching organisational structure is necessary to build critical mass at the intersection of the discipline areas, and exploit the new research opportunities arising from this collaboration.
Deakin University’s willingness to work intimately and creatively with industry already marks the university as distinctive in the research community. The new Institute will build on this, developing partnerships at the regional, national and international level that transcend borders and conventional ways of thinking about research.
The overall research mission of the Institute is to be solutions led rather than discipline led, focussing on developments in advanced materials and biological, chemical and intelligent systems. Allied to a broad operational platform is the creation of emergent technologies and applications based on real-world problems. The Institute researchers aim to deliver solutions through work within their core disciplines to explore the interfaces between integrated biosciences, nanotechnology and information systems.
Deakin University has approved funding through its Strategic Growth Fund to build new research programs and expand on current research strengths in biosciences, materials and fibre technology, and intelligent systems research. Once formally established, these new positions will integral to the development of the Institute for Technology Research and Innovation.
