Metabolic Research Unit
The Metabolic Research Unit (MRU) is a purpose-built molecular facility located on Deakin's Waurn Ponds Campus. It supports research focussed on the causes and characterisation of complex metabolic diseases including obesity and type 2 diabetes, with additional programs investigating the role of metabolism in mood disorders and muscular dystrophy. There is strong expertise in glucose and lipid metabolism, and a particular emphasis on the role of mitochondria in metabolic diseases, with focus on pre-clinical development of novel therapeutics.
The MRU houses strong platforms in cell culture and molecular biology, utilising cutting edge technologies in conjunction with unique model systems to discover novel factors involved in the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes and other disorders. This knowledge is then used to investigate novel compounds that may be developed as drugs to treat these diseases.
