Topics such as environmental management, wetland ecology, and remediation were high on the agenda recently when six delegates from China’s Research Centre for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES) spent a week at Deakin.
The scientists visited all four Deakin campuses, attending workshops, presentations and meetings with researchers from: the Faculty of Science, Engineering and the Built Environment; the School of Life and Environmental Sciences; and the Institute for Frontier Materials.
RCEES is part of China’s Academy of Sciences and is the Republic’s first comprehensive research institution engaged in eco-environmental science and technology. It currently employs 377 staff, with research focussing on environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology, aquatic chemistry, and urban and regional ecology.
During the visit, an MOU was signed to cement links between RCEES and Deakin that should see new projects that target some of the environmental consequences of China’s rapid development.
“China is facing enormous challenges related to water, soil and air, particularly as a result of industrialisation over the past 20 to 30 years,” said Professor Lingxue Kong, from the Institute for Frontier Materials.
“There are now more than 20 million new cars on the road in China each year, and there has been enormous growth in construction. This type of development is having serious effects on the environment.”
Professor Kong said that RCEES was very keen to collaborate with Deakin, as they recognised that many of Deakin’s scientists are “among the best in the world.”
Joint activity already under way includes projects in architecture, noise monitoring and wetland ecology.
