Victorian Legal Services Commissioner, Mr Michael McGarvie, will present a School of Law seminar.

Legal regulation and professional standards will be under the microscope when Victorian Legal Services Commissioner (Legal Services Board), Mr Michael McGarvie, conducts the Deakin School of Law’s second research seminar.

The free seminar is being held, in association with Sladen Legal, on Thursday 14 August at Deakin’s Melbourne City Centre.

Entitled ‘Legal Regulation and Professional Standards’, the seminar will examine the role of the Legal Services Board, including complaints and ethics, and consider the importance of maintaining professional standards within the profession. Mr McGarvie will be introduced by Professor Samantha Hepburn, Deakin’s Associate Head of Law (Research).

Michael McGarvie is committed to preserving existing high standards and independence among Victoria’s legal profession and ensuring that complaints about lawyers are dealt with efficiently and fairly.

He was appointed to the position of Legal Services Commissioner in December 2009. Prior to this, he was CEO of the Supreme Court of Victoria for three years, before which he practised as a solicitor in a private firm (between 1983 and 2006). Here, he primarily specialised in civil litigation over consumer and workplace rights and dispute resolution.

The Deakin School of Law seminar series contributes to public debate on current law issues. The series is featuring a number of high profile speakers, including Professor Simon Rice, Director, Law Reform and Social Justice at the ANU’s College of Law, and Professor Ross Garnaut and Professor John Thwaites, who will both discuss issues related to climate change.
