Induction and Training
The Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) Part 1 Training Course is compulsory for all staff and students who are listed on an animal ethics application and who intend to use live animals in their research or teaching. This training is provided online through CloudDeakin (and in person on request) and must be successfully completed prior to an investigator being listed on an AEC Application.
Biosafety Induction Training (PC1/PC2) is compulsory for all staff and Honours and HDR students who intend to work with microorganisms, biological materials, Gentically Modified Organisms (GMOs), quarantine materials and/or Security Sensitive Biological Agents (SSBAs). Training on the correct use of a Class II Biological Safety Cabinet is also recommended. All staff and students who work in Department of Agriculture (DA) Quarantine Approved Premises (QAPs) must also complete DA QAP Accredited Person training.
Human Ethics training is compulsory for all staff and students submitting an ethics application for the first time at Deakin (either to DUHREC or to a Faculty HEAG). Regardless of whether the training is undertaken in person or online, it is necessary to complete the online quiz available on the D2L site to test your understanding.
Radiation Safety training covers the principles of radiation, hazards associated with radiation work and safe laboratory practices when working with radiation, as well as Deakin and Victorian legislative requirements. It is compulsory for all staff or students who plan to work with radiation. It comprises an online component (electronic presentation and test) and personal induction to the local work area.
Research Integrity training covers the requirements of the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and other matters such as privacy and copyright. It is compulsory for all Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students, and may be attended by other students or staff. It may be completed either in person or online.
Additional information is available by contacting the designated person below.
To register to attend a live workshop, go to the Deakin Research Event Registration System and follow the prompts for the workshop, time and location that suits you. If there is no appropriate workshop, consider completing the module online, or you can contact the designated person below. If you are registered for a session and cannot attend, please remember to cancel your booking, as many of the workshops have limited places available.
All online training is run through the "Office of Research Integrity" Cloud Deakin site. To gain access to the training and quizzes, you will need to do the following:
- Log into CloudDeakin
- Click on the More button in the top right of the screen,
- Select Self Registration from the drop down menu,
- Choose the Office of Research Integrity link in the registration page that opens, and
- Click Register.
The site will then appear within the My Sites area of your Cloud Deakin homepage (if you are a staff member, please ensure you look under your student tab). This will give you access to training modules for all areas managed by Deakin Research Integrity (Animal Ethics, Human Ethics, Research Integrity, Radiation and Biosafety).
If you have any trouble registering for the site or any general queries regarding the training, please contact the designated person below.
