YES I AM A BABY BOOMER...

Mon, 04 Jul 2011 09:49:00 +1000

Deakin Research and ABC Radio National's Life Matters program will present the sixth in their series of IT'S NOT MY FAULT forums at the Alfred Deakin Research Institute on September 8th.

This year's rich array of speakers is actor/singer/comedian and novelist Jane Clifton, Professor David Walker and Dr Kim Toffoletti.

Jane Clifton is the genuine show-business all-rounder. As well as being a baby boomer, she is an actress, singer, published crime novelist, and registered Marriage Celebrant(!) Jane is often asked if there is anything she can't do, to which she simply replies, 'ballet and making money".

Jane's latest book, The Address Book is, as she's keen to tell anyone and everyone, now available in all good book stores.

Professor David Walker is one of Australia's most eminent historians and his recent memoir Not Dark Yet, recently reviewed on this web site, has also been on the bestseller lists in Australia.

Dr Kim Toffoletti is Senior Lecturer in Sociology & Gender Studies at Deakin University. Her research interests span the fields of gender studies, visual culture, sociology and cultural studies.  She is the author of Cyborgs and Barbie Dolls: Feminism, Popular Culture and the Posthuman Body (I.B.Tauris, 2007), and Baudrillard Reframed (I.B.Tauris 2011), which examines the applicability and relevance of French thinker Jean Baudrillard’s writings to the visual arts.

Currently, Kim is co-editing a book on female sports fans, particularly in Australian football, which means she will get on pretty well with Jane Clifton, who is a keen Bombers fan, and David Walker, who still regularly puts his name forward for selection for Geelong.

Dr Toffoletti's interest in Baudrillard and hyper reality might also strike a chord with Jane Clifton: was Prisoner, the long-running television series in which she played Margo, more real than the real thing, as Baudrillard might argue?

Obviously these forums are a mix of the serious and the not so serious, at times taking a light-hearted approach, but they are also genuinely concerned about getting out messages on issues important to our future.

Previous forums have focussed on obesity, ethics, sustainability, constitutional reform and literacy.

The forum on September 8th, which starts at 6pm at the Alfred Deakin Research Institute on the Geelong Waterfront, will be recorded for later broadcast on ABC Radio National's Life Matters program.

Entry is free.
