Deakin has successfully gained two inaugural ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards (DECRAs) and has been awarded another ARC Future Fellowship.

Dr Ben Isakhan from the Centre for Citizenship & Globalisation and Dr Nicky Ridgers the Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Sciences have both been awarded a DECRA.

Dr Isakhan's project “Measuring the Destruction of Heritage and Spikes of Violence in Iraq” will consider the relationship between heritage destruction and violence in Iraq since 2003.

Dr Ridgers is a current Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellow.  Her project “Understanding patterns of physical activity in youth: exploring compensatory effects”  will inform the development of physical activity promotion strategies by examining when children are active, why they are active, and how these patterns change following participation in physical activity or the restriction of sedentary behaviour.

"Nicky's award illustrates that the Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Researcher scheme is accurately targeting the next generation of researchers," said Deakin's Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lee Astheimer.

"I wish to congratulate both Ben and Nicky, and also Associate Professor Andre Renzaho, Deakin's newest ARC Future Fellow."

Deakin has won four ARC Future Fellows since the scheme began. Associate Professor Renzaho's program of research is titled “Reducing the social, economic and health burden associated with obesity-related chronic diseases among socio-economically disadvantaged populations” and aims to inform new methods and approaches for reducing obesity-related chronic diseases (OCDs) among socially disadvantaged populations in Australia.
