Dr Sharon Brennan has been awarded a RM Gibson Scientific Research Award, 2011, from the Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG)..

Dr Brennan is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow working with the population-based Geelong Osteoporosis Study, Barwon Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit, Deakin University; a highly productive research unit located at Barwon Health, Geelong.

The RM Gibson Scientific Research Award honours the memory of Dr Richard Maxwell Gibson who played a foundational role in the development of gerontology within Australia, including key contributions to the AAG, and also serving as National President and the inaugural Chairman of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics Asia Oceania Region.

The object of the grant is to encourage and support emerging researchers in the field of ageing, and to support the researcher in undertaking a specific research project over a one year period.

Dr Brennan’s area of research is focused upon the social determinants of musculoskeletal disease and factors impacting upon utilisation of preventive services and treatment uptake; an area in which she has published widely in leading international journals.

“The financial support provided by this award will enable me to examine gender equality in bone densitometry utilisation for patients aged 50 years and over," she said.

"The findings from this project will yield new and innovative perspectives on utilisation of densitometry for preventive bone health and post-fracture care within Geelong and the surrounding regions.”
