Strategic global partnerships the way forward says Gary Heyden.

Deakin University’s research partnerships with industry are set to enter a brand new world with the arrival of the new Director of Deakin Research Commercial, Gary Heyden.

“There are some really fantastic research projects going on here at Deakin and it is time for the world to find out about them,” said Gary, who moves to Deakin from UniQuest, one of Australia’s leading research commercialisation companies.

“With my experience, it will be my job to lead my colleagues in Deakin Research Commercial in strategically making a new range of potential industry partners aware of what the researchers at our University are capable of in terms of helping them develop new products and improved ways of going about their business.

“In the short term I have been in my role I have been amazed at some of the work that is going on here, and the potential for us to partner with major industry partners.”

Deakin Research Commercial has been set up to develop successful long term partnerships with industry, business and government.

The University also has a philosophy of working in partnership with other Universities and Research Institutes to deliver complete solutions to industry partners.

“It’s time to take ourselves to the next level, which includes focussing more on the global opportunities as well as those here in Australia,” Gary said.

“A lot of the research at Deakin is already world-class, as revealed in the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative last year.

“We received the top ranking of 5, defined as well above world standards, in Materials Engineering, Medical Physiology and Human Movement and Sports Sciences and Zoology.

“We also received rankings of 4, defined as above world standards, in the Engineering and Medical and Health Sciences clusters, and in the specific fields of Analytical Chemistry, Fisheries Sciences, Manufacturing Engineering, Paediatrics and Reproductive Medicine, Pharmacology, Nursing, Nutrition and Dietetics, Commercial Services, and Curatorial Studies.

“It is a matter now of matching our research up with international business partners so that everyone can benefit.”
