Crowdfunding whiz shares tips with 'Lancet'

One of Deakin's Research My World crowd funding "torch bearers," Dr Mel Thomson, has been interviewed by 'The Lancet' - the world’s leading general medical journal - in an article on the burgeoning use of crowd funding by medical researchers.

Based within the School of Medicine, Dr Thomson is the only researcher to have used Deakin’s Research my World Pozible program twice. She was a “beta tester” in the first round in May 2013 with her 'Mighty Maggots' project and gained further funds through her 'Hips for Hipsters' project in June.

Dr Thomson is making a name for herself in science communication, with a popular blog and a growing number of Twitter followers. She has also provided crowdfunding mentoring to a number of Australian researchers, including those also interviewed by 'The Lancet' - and recently acquired a new US-based crowd funding mentee from the world of the ATP tennis tour via Twitter. She is also now an official Ambassador for the Research category on the Pozible Platform.
