Professor John Duncan, a regular visitor to Deakin University from New Zealand, has been awarded the Geoff Wilson Medal.

"John has been an active member of our team, giving up his time over many years to help our research students gain more insight into metal Forming," said Professor Peter Hodgson, the Director of the Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation and who made the presentation to Professor Duncan.

"He is passionate that the automotive industry needs to understand the basic mechanics of how a car panel is made and that we need more engineering skills and less black art.

"He has also helped students work out the structure of their thesis and papers."

Professor Duncan, who comes to Deakin two or three times a year, said winning the award was both an honour and a surprise.

"I certainly wasn't expecting it," he said.

"I enjoy coming to Deakin because it has some of the best young engineers in the world all working on something that I believe to be very important."

The Geoff Wilson Medal is named in honour of the former vice-chancellor of Deakin University, Professor Geoffrey Victor Herbert Wilson, AM.

A full feature on Professor Duncan and his passion for motor vehicles, both old and new, will appear in the May edition of the Deakin Research electronic newsletter.
