Why is it NEWS?

Why is a news story chosen? Select news stories from any news bulletin, online news site or newspaper. Read the list of newsworthy criteria below and tick the reasons why you think a news story was chosen.

  • Importance - important to the viewer’s well being
  • Timeliness - events happen and the news is of immediate interest
  • Proximity - events occur in the local area
  • Prominence - well known people are involved
  • Uniqueness - events are very unusual
  • Suspense - the outcome of an event is not yet known
  • Conflict - people or groups opposing one another
  • Emotions - love, hate, fear, horror, pity
  • Progress - advances in science, technology, medicine

Select news stories and tick the criteria box it fits into. The best news stories have many of these!
