The flagship of the School is the combined degree in Architecture and Construction Management. This program of study blends the two degrees of Bachelor of Design(Architecture) and Bachelor of Construction Management into a continuous framework. The course is designed as a full five year program. Followed by the Masters of Architecture(Design), one year.
The course also leads to the award of a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) degree provided at least 50% of the units in that course were taken (i.e. not exempted) and the equivalent subjects were completed. The normal time frame of five years is achieved only because of the high proportion of shared units involved in both disciplines. This is difficult if not impossible for other universities to replicate, and when followed by the Masters of Architecture (Design) has proved a major benefit to graduates seeking employment.
The six year program the educational requirements of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA), the Architects Registration Board of Victoria (ARBV), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the Australian Institute of Building (AIB), the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS) and the Facility Management Association of Australia (FMA).
Graduates from the combined degree are in high demand, particularly from major design and cunstruction companies who have long seen the benefit of project managers who possess a good understanding of the design process and the way architects "think". As a result, graduates of the combined degree are usually in very responsible roles and high salaries, but demand outstrips supply.
Prerequisites are Units 3 and 4 - English (any).
You need to apply specifically for the combined degree, although it is possible to move into either Architecture or Construction Management should things prove too difficult. But if you want to pursue an influential career in the construction/property industry, this course is definitely for you. Higher entrance results, however, do apply.
Middle band students will be given consideration for performance in English(Any), Business Management, Economics, History(Any), Science(Any), Visual Communication and Design, and to Deakin access and Equity Program applicants.
