Bachelor of Facilities Management / Construction Management

The provision of physical space is critical to human wellbeing (even survival) and underpins all aspects of our social fabric. Infrastructure logistics is defined as the blend of construction project management and facilities management, and leads to a combined degree (5 years) or early exit single degrees in facilities management (after 3 years) or construction management (after 4 years), as shown in the diagram below.

Course duration can be shortened by up to 1 year by undertaking optional summer units. Advanced standing up to 2 years full time is provided for approved prior learning. Honours level units are open to students who perform meritoriously. Final year can be off campus or accelerated over summer semesters.

Normal Five Year Course

Course Structure

Deakin's combined degree in Facilities Management covers all the professional requirements for practice as a facilities manager and as a construction project manager (including quantity surveyor and building surveyor) in the global property/construction industry. For the first time this dual qualification enables graduates to seamlessly move between new project developments and refurbishment or facilities planning work as opportunities and demand may dictate. Deakin is the first university in Australia to offer this unique internationally accredited career pathway-now available at its award-winning Geelong Waterfront campus.

Professional Recognition

The Bachelor of Facilities Management (BFM) is an early exit option from the combined degree after 3 years of full-time study. An additional honours year is also available by invitation. BFM (Hons) is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

The Bachelor of Construction Management (BCM) is an early exit option from the combined degree after 4 years of full-time study, and includes an integral honours year available by invitation. It is also offered as a stand-alone degree or combined with architectural design. BCM is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Australian Institute of Building (AIB), Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS) and the Building Commission of victoria (BCV).

Career Fields

As a graduate of the combined degree (CM+FM) you can move seamlessly between new project developments and refurbishment or facilities planning work as opportunities and demand may dictate. This exceptional program is offered only by Deakin University.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites are Units 3 and 4 - English (any).

You need to apply specifically for the combined degree, although it is possible to move into either Facilties Management or Construction Management should things prove too difficult. But if you want to pursue an influential career in the construction/property industry, this course is definitely for you. Higher entrance results, however, do apply.

ENTER Scores

Middle band students with a study score of at least 20 in up to three of chemistry, physics, specialist mathematics, mathematical methods or visual communication and design will have their ENTER increased up to one point higher per study, to a maximum three points.
