David Beynon - BERG Co-Director/Senior Lecturer

Associate Professor Judith Trimble

BArch (Hon), Melb, 1989
PhD, Melb, 2002

Dr. David Beynon has a PhD from University of Melbourne in urban design. His current research involves investigating architecture as a social and cultural practice, particularly in the context of Australia's engagement with Asia and the architectural implications of migration and hybridity. His recent writing on these subjects include 'Newly Authentic Architecture in Southeast Asia', in Progress: The Proceedings of the Society of Architectural Historians Australia New Zealand Conference, Society of Architectural Historians Australia New Zealand, RMIT University, Melbourne 2004, and 'Melbourne's 'Third World-Looking' Architecture' in the book, Melbourne: Suburbs and City, (2005).
Dr. Beynon lectures in the areas of Architectural Design (currently taking a third year design studio concentrating on culturally and socially sustainable architecture), Architectural Practice and Asian Architecture. This last unit is new to Deakin University and investigates the social, material and symbolic roles of architecture in traditional, colonial and contemporary Asian societies. Dr. Beynon is also a registered architect. He received his B.Arch (Honours) from University of Melbourne in 1990, and has practised in Melbourne, Brisbane and Singapore. He maintains a link to practice through investigations into the design of insertions, adaptations and urban interventions, including shopfront-grafted home-offices, East-West hybrid courtyard buildings, and mobile office-dwellings.
