Sambit Datta currently teaches design and computing units in the School of Architecture and Building. He studied architecture in the School of Architecture, CEPT, Ahmedabad and ETH Zurich, completed a masters at NUS, Singapore and a PhD at Adelaide University.
Sambit is interested in the idea of design practice as a process of translation from formal, abstract ideas to their material realisation in architecture. His research focus is on developing robust theories, models and tools for investigating the the role of measureable "intermediaries" such as geometry, representation and computational modelling in the process of translation.
Currently, this research has taken two inter-related streams. First, formal and computational models investigating translation in the conceptual, exploratory phases of design; Second, geometrical and generative studies of canonical form derived from the study of extant tenth century Hindu temples.
