IT Services Management

Launching a new Academic Initiative with IBM

The professional services industry is the fastest growing sector of the economy and is estimated to be between 70-80% of most western economies' GDP. This continued growth of the services industry has created the need for organisations to recruit employees with knowledge of the service economy and the skills and attributes required for services management. Services Science, Management and Engineering (SSME) is a new academic discipline that has been developed by IBM in partnership with leading universities including University of California – Berkeley, Oxford, Stanford, MIT, Sydney University, and now Deakin University.

The first of these units Services Management (SIT794), available over the summer (2007-2008), brings together ongoing work in computer science, operations research, business strategy, management sciences, social and cognitive sciences, and legal sciences to develop the skills required in a services-led economy. The unit will include guest lectures from industry, detailed case studies, and relevant theoretical perspectives including the latest developments in services science. This unit can be taken as part of an existing post graduate program or as a single subject enrolment.

Services Management (SIT794) is coupled with 3 other MIT units to form the SSME specialism. These units are: Service-Oriented Architectures and Technologies (SIT737), IT Services in Organisations (SIT775), and Recent Developments in IT (SIT717) including Business Intelligence and Customer Relationship Management. The four SSME units can be studied as a stand-alone Graduate Certificate of IT, and they also form a specialism within the Master of IT degree.
