Modelling Phase transformations and Microstructural Development

Microstructural development modelling studies undertaken at CMFI is conducted in partnership with researchers at the University of Wollongong, TU Delft (Netherlands) and RWTH (Aachen) using Micress a multi-component, multi-phase simulation package. Based on a Phase Field methodology, Micress is a flexible code that includes the capability to simulate not only phase transformations, but also recrystallisation and grain growth. The specific objectives of a current ARC Discovery Grant is to investigate the link between rapid solidification processing and the development of microstructure with subsequent thermomechanical processing. Issues to be addressed include segregation of solutes during far-from equilibrium processing, role of solutes inheterogenities on delta-ferrite to austenite and austenite to ferrite phase transformations, the role of nano-precipitates in recrystallisation, grain growth and austenite decomposition.
