Deakin University’s Engineering (Mechanical) course provides students with broad theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience to build successful careers in any of the diverse roles available to them. The course draws heavily on Deakin’s world-class research in automotive engineering and advanced materials.
Engineering students at Deakin University do not have to choose a specialism before they enter their course. Engineering students undertake common subjects in their first year before they choose to specialise in Electronics, Robotics and Mechatronics or Mechanical Engineering. This format allows students to make a more informed decision and gain a broad base of knowledge in engineering.
The course focuses on hands-on experience, including the opportunity for students to design and build a race car for an international competition. The project and other hands-on work complements the theoretical knowledge offered in the classroom to create career-ready graduates. During two-week professional practice units, students visit workplaces, learn from industry leaders and build valuable networks.
Small classes and accessible lecturers help students get the best out of their university education and offer a friendly learning environment. Students also have access to fully-equipped laboratories and use cutting-edge computer-aided software that is used in modern industrial workplaces. They also work with, and learn from, leading researchers in Deakin’s Geelong Technology Precinct.
Deakin is one of only two universities in Australia that offer Mechanical Engineering off-campus using an online service. Flexible study options enable courses to be completed in conjunction with career, family and travel plans.
