Bachelor of Environmental Science (Marine Biology)
Warrnambool Campus.
Deakin’s Marine Biology course provides the opportunity to study temperate marine biology in an environment on the Great Ocean Road, within easy reach of spectacular marine environments. The course combines theoretical learning and hands-on experience to give students the skills and knowledge employers are looking for.
Extensive fieldwork at Warrnambool and Queenscliff, including summer schools and an opportunity to study a tropical marine environment on the Great Barrier Reef, provide an exciting marine biology experience and absorbing methods of learning for students.
Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment including the exciting remotely operated Underwater Vehicle. The vehicle will this year allow images generated on the sea floor to be beamed into the classroom, providing a window into the underwater environment.
Industry and government partners including the Victorian Marine Sciences Consortium at Queenscliff, the Department of Sustainability and Environment and catchment management authorities contribute to the course to ensure it remains relevant and progressive. These partners provide support and opportunities for students undertaking professional development and training. Students also gain workplace experience with an industry or government-based environmental organisation and have the opportunity to undertake scholarships with the Earthwatch Institute, working on diverse projects that address critical environmental and social issues.
A degree in Environmental Science is a broad qualification that combines the skills for a specialised career with more generic skills that give graduates job flexibility and broad career options. Graduates will gain the knowledge and skills to be managers of all facets of the natural environment.
Students studying Marine Biology at Deakin can enhance their learning experience by undertaking an international exchange with several partners including Coastal Carolina University in the USA and Bodo University in Norway.
