Bachelor of Information Technology (Interactive Media)

Deakin’s Bachelor of Information Technology (Interactive Media)^ will enable you to design and author interactive and multimedia information integrating images, video, sound, animation and text to create electronic products for a range of environments. The focus of this course is on the practical application of skills and concepts. Graduates are multiskilled people with a broad understanding of information technology with specialist expertise in the design and development of web systems, DVD authoring and information delivery.

The course will introduce you to fundamental principles, together with tools and techniques needed to design interactive and multimedia information and deploy multimedia systems. The course emphasises state-of-the-art standards and engages in significant hands-on experience with leading authoring packages. You may also take an elective stream in the area of animation, through the School of Communication and Creative Arts.

The course has been devised to provide a creative complement to the information technology-focused units in this course.

Why study this course?

You will learn how to design and author interactive information combining audio, image, video, graphics and text within scripted delivery systems.

In addition, the Work Integrated Learning Program (WIL) gives you the opportunity to complete an internship or paid industry-based learning placement and gain credit towards your degree. Many students take up industry placements with leading information technology companies to gain experience in the workplace and generate contacts in the industry.

Career opportunities

This course can lead to career opportunities in interactive systems, interface design, web site development or multimedia design. A few graduates have even started their own web design businesses. The structure of the course also makes graduates suited to the IT industry in general with skills in software development, data communications and the development of information systems.

Leading information technology companies including IBM Australia, Telstra and Microsoft contribute to Deakin’s courses as part of the Advisory Board to ensure courses are relevant and produce highly employable graduates.

Flexible delivery

Deakin’s Information Technology courses are structured to provide flexibility for students.

Trimester 3 unit offerings give students the opportunity to study over three trimesters. A number of IT units will be offered in Trimester 3. (Units offered in Trimester 3 are subject to change on an annual basis.)

International study opportunities

Deakin's Study Abroad and Exchange Office offers various programs including exchange, study abroad, short-term study programs, study tours and international volunteering opportunities, enabling students to study overseas for a few weeks, a trimester, or a year as part of their degree.
