How to find work experience

What is the process?

Students are required to contact potential host organisations in the quest to complete a total of eighty hours of work experience.

The Faculty of Science and Technology will provide students with a starting list of host organisations; however students are encouraged to seek their own placement.  A placement that will hopefully path the way for potential employment opportunities and broaden their skills and knowledge in the biomedical industry.

Once the student has found a host and negotiated work experience time frames that suit them both, the student is required to email Lee Reid (lee.reid@deakin.edu.au) with the host details, including supervisor name and email address, and she will finalise the placement i.e. provide contract paperwork and insurance documents.

Duration of placement

Within the Professional Practice Program students must complete a total of eighty hours of work experience, this can be undertaken at a single host organisation or can be split among a few.  While a two week placement may seem like a short time, fitting it in to your busy schedule will require planning.  We encourage you to begin considering your work experience options now.

Deakin is very flexible with the eighty hours of placement that is required.  Students are able to undertake them in a consecutive two week block or two individual blocks separated between Semester one.  Students also have the option to work a day or half a day a week throughout the year.  As long as the eighty hours of placement has been achieved before the end of Semester two, students will satisfy this component of the unit’s assessment.

Nature of work

Super and mentoring

Host organisations are required to assign a supervisor and a mentor for the student for the duration of the placement.

Recruitment opportunities

Host organisations are under no obligation to recruit work experience students upon completion of placement.  However, employment opportunities may arise from such experiences or due to students past placement.  Please select your host organisation wisely; you never know what it might lead to.

Deadlines

The eighty hours of work experience must be completed by the end of Semester two.
