Step 2 explains the support stucture which is in place to assist you during your postgraduate studies. Deakin has many dis who are there to help you during your candidature to make your time at Deakin both rewarding and memorable.


Research Services

Research Services Division provides the central administrative support for research and research training for the University. This includes research policy and planning, coordination of the major research data collections, and central administration of higher degrees by research, research scholarships, grants, fellowships, and ethics in relation to research. Research Services provides a link between candidates, Schools and the research management committees. You are encouraged to contact Research Services Staff on any matter relating to your candidature or super. They are located on the Melbourne and Geelong campuses:

The Faculty and Schools

The Faculty of Science and Technology programs are delivered through three Schools - Architecture and Building, Life and Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Information Technology.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered across the Melbourne Campus at Burwood, Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds, Geelong Waterfront Campus and Warrnambool Campus.

Your main source of support during candidature is your supervisor, however, there are also staff at the school and faculty levels who are available for advice during your HDR candidature.

Deakin Central

Deakin Central has been established as a "one stop shop" to assist students with the following services: enrolment, HECS-HELP and fee queries/payments, parking permits, ITS and Deakin Card queries. You can contact Customer Service on  03 9244 6333 Melbourne, 03 5563 3333 Warrnambool or 03 5227 2333 Geelong. Deakin Central offices are located on the Melbourne, Warrnambool, Geelong (Waurn Ponds) and Geelong Waterfront campuses and staff can assist you with your all administrative matters.

Library

The Deakin University Library operates on each campus providing information resources and services which support the programs of the University. The Library provides services and resources to both on-campus and off-campus candidates. You are encouraged to make contact with your Faculty or School Liaison Librarian.

The Library offers all research candidates the opportunity to become an independent researcher, capable of searching printed, CD-ROM, Internet and selected online databases and services. Sessions are offered by the Liaison Librarian for your School on your campus, either individually or in groups. Ask at the desk for more information.

The Library has mounted a Research Skills module on the Internet to assist researchers locate and select electronic information and guide you to significant resources held in the Deakin Library. You can reach the Research Skills module from the Library’s website.

Having problems finding what you want? Try the Deakin University Library's SmartSearch Tutorial. This interactive tutorial will help you to develop your library and information skills. Learn how to search the Library catalogue, journal databases and the Internet to find material for your research or assignments, and referencing.

Deakin University Student Association (DUSA)

The Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) is the representative body for all Deakin University students. DUSA has a President elected by all Deakin students and Postgraduate, International and Undergraduate Vice-Presidents elected by students in their cohort. DUSA has elected campus conveners at each Deakin campus. DUSA employs over 50 staff and has a dedicated specific Research, Education and Postgraduate Support division.

DUSA provides a wide range of services to all Deakin students, including postgraduate students (e.g. the annual postgraduate conference). These include advocacy for individual students before the University over matters such as course quality, disputed assessments and postgraduate super. DUSA provides support for student representatives within the University administration, such as student members of University Council, Academic Board, Faculty Boards and other university committees. DUSA advocates on behalf of all Deakin students to improve the quality of academic resources available to Deakin students, such as libraries, computer laboratories, and improved support for off-campus students. DUSA also advocates on behalf of Deakin students to all levels of government.

Deakin International

Deakin International provides support services to international students from the time when an application is lodged until graduation. Support services provided during the admission process and the early stages of candidature include:

International students should report to the Deakin International office on their campus shortly after arrival in Australia.

Information Technology Services Di

Information Technology Services Di (ITS) provides access to computer facilities and laboratories for all students. It maintains the University's data network and its gateway to the Internet. Services IT provide: IT Security, Accounts and passwords, Internet, Email, Computing laboratories, IT Support, IT Training, User Guides and Information Sheets and Enquiries.

Deakin Learning Tool Kit (DLT)
Make sure you have your copy of the Deakin Learning Toolkit which is mailed to research students and also available from Deakin University Student Association offices (DUSA), AASD Student Information Centres, Libraries, Bookshops, Deakin Central Offices and the ITS Di.

You should make use of the Toolkit. It contains a lot of information that is relevant to you, whether you are studying on or off campus. Deakin uses online technologies in many aspects of teaching and learning, student support, administration and general communication. As a Deakin student, you can benefit from online facilities and services, such as the Deakin Online portal.

Research and Research Training Committee

Research and Research Training Committee is a committee of the Academic Board. It is responsible for providing advice to the Board on policy matters relating to research and research training and for monitoring research performance and the quality of higher degree by research programs. The terms of reference and membership of the Committee are outlined in the Guide to Candidature - Appendix. The Committee is chaired by the Deputy Chair of Academic Board, and two of the members are higher degree by research candidates.
